“Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life”
Whenever I go off on one about making time for self care to some of the people in my life – especially busy women like my Mum, for example – I’m often met with a blank stare. And I totally get it! Sometimes, I barely have time to eat a meal on a busy work day, never mind pamper myself and practice ‘self care’.
However, as I’ve discussed on this blog before, it’s those times when we ARE busy that we NEED self care practices the most.
If you’re a busy bee and want to make more time for yourself in your schedule, I’m sharing some simple tips on how you can fit it all in.
Make it a habit
I’ve found the self care practices with the biggest impact are the ones we commit to on a regular basis, and integrate into our weekly or daily routine. It’s so much easier to stay consistent and show up for ourselves if we have that schedule.
For example, I always dedicate one evening a week, usually a Sunday, to full on, indulgent relaxation – I’ll run a bath, put a face mask on, do my nails, watch Netflix and generally recharge my batteries before the new week ahead.
Having that schedule set in place, shows yourself that A – you are worth the commitment of self care, and B – the positive impact those activities have on your every day life.
When you realise over time that healthy, sustainable self care habits can make you more productive, sleep better, have more energy and just be more bad ass, it’s so much easier to prioritise them.
The same goes for my health and fitness habits. I know that most mornings, I’m either doing a Youtube workout at home or heading to the gym. There is no hoping and praying I will squeeze in a workout throughout the week. It’s at the top of my to do list as the first thing in my day. Which brings me nicely onto my next point…
Make the most of your mornings
I’m so lucky that since discovering the Miracle Morning routine, I have an hour of peaceful bliss in my day. This is something that almost anyone can implement, because there’s very little that can get in the way of your morning.
No one else in the house is awake, especially if you purposely get up 30-60 minutes before they normally do. There is no work to do. There are no phone calls. It’s just you, and some precious time to spend with yourself however you want to. Reading a good book, practicing your favourite hobby, working out, making a delicious breakfast or even just writing your to do list for the day can be therapeutic.
I would be a hot mess without my morning routine, and I highly suggest you try it out if you haven’t already.
And if mornings really don’t work for you, perhaps try an evening routine. The same principle can apply for night owls – everyone’s off to bed, work is done for the day and you have some time to spend doing something kind and relaxing for yourself.
Prioritise your physical, mental and emotional health
Most people have that moment of realisation, where they’ve said yes to too many people and in doing so, have said no to themselves.
At the end of the day, we choose how to spend our time by prioritising certain things. And if you want to be the healthiest, happiest version of yourself, you need to prioritise YOU.
A happy, healthy life begins the day you decide that you deserve to feel your best.
I feel very passionate about this, but recently I’ve been learning to say ‘no’ a lot more, in business and in life. I am very picky about how I spend my time, because I know what my priorities are. And that includes making sure I have enough time to stop and breathe in between the craziness of life!
Once you know what your main priorities are, it becomes much easier to make time for them. That could mean saying no to social events, choosing work projects wisely, setting boundaries with family and friends, delegating or outsourcing tasks and getting help to free up some time. Whatever it looks like for you, I really encourage you to make that change in your life. It can be challenging at first, but the weight lifted off your shoulders when you know you’re showing up for yourself is an incredible feeling.
